On September 14, 2024, Boston Ujima Project, in collaboration with UGBA member Live Like a Local Tours Boston and the MV Black Business Directory, hosted the third Martha’s Vineyard Black Business Day Tour. The tour gave community members an opportunity to explore the island’s rich history with direct support for Black-owned businesses. This collaboration is part of Ujima’s Hyperlocal Procurement Program, designed to strengthen local economic networks by directly engaging with UGBA members through the procurement of their goods and services, and complements Ujima’s existing investment strategies and support mechanisms.
The day started with breakfast from Nubian Markets, Roxbury’s market, café, and gathering space celebrating the African diaspora through food and culture. Attendees then enjoyed a scenic steamship ride from Wood’s Hole to Oak Bluffs, followed by a guided tour of the African American Heritage Trail, showcasing the rich cultural and historical roots of the island’s Black community.
Throughout the day, participants explored Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, and other parts of the island, connecting with local Black business owners. One of the highlights was the "Sip & Shop" event, where attendees visited businesses like Sideline and Lennox & Harvey, supporting local entrepreneurs. An optional lunch at Eleventh Circuit gave everyone the chance to unwind and enjoy some delicious food.
Curated by Live Like a Local Tours Boston and supported by the MV Black Business Directory, the tour underscored the importance of recognizing and supporting businesses beyond the well-known areas of Oak Bluffs.
We extend a special thanks to Nubian Markets, Eleventh Circuit, Sideline, the African American Heritage Trail, Your Taxi, India Rose, Michael Johnson Photography, Lennox & Harvey, Vineyard Caribbean Cuisine, Live Like a Local Tours Boston, and most importantly participants and volunteers for making the event a success.
