The Boston Ujima Project Inc. is excited to welcome the Boston Community Solar Cooperative (BCSC) to the Ujima Good Business Alliance (UGBA).

Boston Community Solar Cooperative believes in a future powered by the sun and owned by the community. Their community solar program builds cooperatively-owned solar arrays that are controlled by local communities, resulting in both financial benefits and clean electricity kept close to home.

Since 2021, the cooperative began and continues to build a coalition of individuals, businesses, and non-profits: a grassroots movement to create an equitable and just transition to a clean energy economy in Boston. After formally launching as a co-op in 2024, BCSC worked with partners to begin its first solar array on the rooftop of 195 Bowdoin Street in Dorchester, home to the Dorchester Food Co-op.

In June 2026, our Community Standards Committee extended an invitation to Boston Community Solar Cooperative  to join the UGBA, which they graciously accepted. Joining the Alliance is a rigorous process that involves compliance with our 36 Good Business Standards.

The Community Standards Committee was excited by their outstanding good business practices, including:

  • Community Civic Engagement: BCSC hosts quarterly "We Got the Power" workshops to educate community members about the many benefits of solar energy.

  • Product or Service Mission: BCSC seeks to support Black owned businesses in all of their activities that include printing of marketing materials, catering for events and hiring of contractors and engineering firms.

  • Worker Civic Engagement: All co-op business decisions are governed by a voting process that includes all members. Decisions range for participating in an event to hiring an EPC contractor
