Boston Ujima Project Inc. is excited to welcome Nubian Markets to the Ujima Good Business Alliance (UGBA). Nubian Markets is more than just a market. It’s a model and an embodiment of the African history that is so deeply rooted within the soils of this nation, and in Nubian Square.
Founders Ismail Samad and Yusuf Yassin created Nubian Markets to serve as a hub for the people within the Roxbury community. As an experienced zero-waste chef, Ismail hopes to give a platform to the amazing foods and flavors of the African diaspora. Together, Ismail and Yusuf look forward to contributing to the efforts that have been long standing in Roxbury, to create a destination that is grounded in the flavors and culture of the people who have been here for generations.
In June 2025, our Community Standards Committee joyously extended an invitation to Nubian Markets to join the UGBA, which they graciously accepted. Joining the Alliance is a rigorous process that involves compliance with our 36 Good Business Standards.
The Community Standards Committee was excited by their outstanding good business practices, including:
Civic Engagement: Nubian Markets hosts community events with numerous objectives and social missions. Community members and employees are encouraged to engage in civil discourse.
Product and Service Mission: Nubian Markets goal is to be a community hub where members gather and discuss their needs. They are constantly advocating for healthy, nutritious, and affordable food, access, community generational wealth building and anti-gentrification.
Supplier Diversity: Nubian Markets has over forty BIPOC products and vendors on their shelves.
Join us in welcoming Nubian Markets to the UGBA!
